Take a Peep

LIKE an oasis in the desert of television comedy, Peep Show is a welcome relief to viewers thirsting for something more than just a wry smile.
The English show stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb as two mismatched friends who share a London flat.
Mitchell plays Mark Corrigan, a socially awkward and miserable man in a neat jumper and slacks. Webb plays his far more suave friend Jeremy, an unemployed musician who is much more confident than Mark.
The first point-of-difference of this show is its point-of-view camera angle. The front-on shot is something that has been employed occasionally by other comedies, but Peep Show takes its use to another level.
The close-up shots of the main characters’ rather odd faces are combined with continual voice-overs by both men, giving the viewer an amusing and often disturbing insight into their minds.
Not a great deal happens in the show and what little does happen is certainly not neatly wrapped by the episode’s end.
Most of the action revolves around the romantic entanglements of the pair. For two social misfits, they seem to have plenty of luck with the ladies, but this certainly helps to keep the comedy gold rolling along.
The show preceding it on ABC2, Party Down, is also worth a look. An American comedy about a Los Angeles catering crew, it will make you laugh. I promise.
