STUDENTS at Berwick Primary School can enjoy dancing classes, music lessons and special community events in their new multi-purpose centre.
The centre, opened recently by La Trobe MP Laura Smyth, will also be used as a cooking service area and a conference room.
Principal Kaye Seton said that the land was not being used constructively before the centre was built.
“It’s just fantastic to have that land being used for something that benefits the school community,” Ms Seton said.
Berwick Primary School received $2,100,000 under the Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER).
So far, students have enjoyed the centre, using it for a variety of activities and showing it off to their parents.
Ms Seton said she would like the gym extended to make use of the space on the school’s property.
“The next improvement to the school that I would like to see would be for the gym to be bigger than it is now,” she said.
While she said she would like a refurbished gym for the school’s sporting facilities, Ms Seton said the children were enjoying the new centre, particularly those interested in the performing arts.
“The building is working great, we are so happy with the space and it’s certainly made a big difference,” she said.
Ms Smyth said the centre is an important milestone for the BER.
“It has been fantastic to see the principal, school staff, parents and tradespeople working together to deliver these important projects.
“Now that they are completed, teachers and students in our local schools will be teaching and learning in 21st century facilities that they so richly deserve,” she said.
