Market winds down for long weekend

NEXT week is a long weekend, so it was a little surprising to see a smaller penning of cattle offered at VLE Pakenham.
There were 450 vealers and 850 young cattle penned, and some of these were heavy steers over 500 kilograms liveweight.
A larger percentage of grown cattle were yarded, and included 300 bullocks.
The quality of the yarding was varied with a number of plainer condition cattle sold, and a few of poor breeding as well.
While most of the regular buyers were present, demand was weaker.
Some cattle sold at unchanged rates, but most were two cents to seven cents per kilogram cheaper.
Only a few top quality B muscle vealers made from 245 cents to 267 cents with most of the better quality vealers making 200 cents to 235 cents, and plainer grades between 172 cents and 205 cents per kilogram.
There was a large penning of 600 yearling steers and some 330 heifers penned, but weaker competition saw prices vary.
The best quality steers made from 192 cents to 217 cents, and heifers 188 cents to 218 cents per kilogram.
There were many others that made from 165 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
Feedlot and restocker competition was quite good, and prices achieved were between 185 cents and 228 cents per kilogram.
Demand for both the heavy yearling steers mouthed 0 to 2 teeth, and prime bullocks was weaker, which saw bullocks make from 174 cents to 188 cents, and a few sales of steers to 192 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing bullocks made from 144 cents to 179 cents with some grown heifers mostly 142 cents to 177 cents per kilogram.
