GARFIELD’S Paul Wheeler celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday – and what better way to do it than over a round of golf and a social gathering.
Among the guests at the golf club were Wheeler family members, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, current and previous club members, representatives of the West Gippsland Golf Association, representatives from state levels, past and present Country Week players, pennant players and many other friends from Wheeler’s long association with golf.
The winner of the afternoon event and C Grade was Lou Milner (22) with 40 points.
The A Grade winner was Jackson Wade (eight) with 38 points and B Grade went to Garry Kelly (18) with 38 points. Down the line winners were Craig Cousin and Dave Williams, both 38, P. Brown (Yallourn), Ryan Percy, Glen Laity and Charlie Barnes, all 37, P. T. Brown and J. Scrivener, 36.
The nearest the pins were Jackson Wade (fourth), Ron Hampton (eighth), Glen Laity (ninth), Ron Fielding (11th), PT Brown (14th) and Charlie Hardy (16th).
The morning event was won by Steve Squires with 40 points off his handicap of 20 – also making him the winner of B Grade. A Grade went to Ray Johnson with 36 points off a handicap of 13.
Nearest the pins were Shane Male (fourth), Ray Johnson (11th) and David Thorp (14th). Down the lines were won by Wally Poulter 38, Paul Kaye 37, Ken Pettiford and John Blair, both 36.
Dale Scurlock had an eagle on the 17th … cleaning out the eagles nest. The women’s winner was D. Wood (36) of Moe with 37 points and the raffle winner was Wayne Tymenson.
The Thursday event was won by Peter Skinner (19) with 39 points from R. Edwards (19) with 37. They were followed by Tony Elliot (15) with 36 points. Down the lines went to Peter Lacey (fourth), Ray Johnson (ninth), Peter Lacey (11th), R. Edwards (14th) and the Gordon Palmer (16th).
The Sunday stableford event was won by Quinton Wright with 40 points off his handicap of 28.
Sunday was the David Bull open mixed Canadian event, the scratch winners were R. and D. Sculock with a score of 74.
The A Grade handicap winners were Steve Kohut/Leesa Mathews (nine) with 68 and the B Grade winner was P Loebert/T Kren (16½) nett 71½. The visitors’ trophy went to G. and H. Geisler with 69½.
Down the lines went to G. and A. McLure 70½, Terry Garrett/D. Pilkington 70 7/8 and G. Laity/Jeanette Mitchell 71 7/8.
