Strong market draws in sellers

THERE was a 20 per cent increase in supply on the strength of good prices at VLE Pakenham the previous week.
Most, if not all of this was due to the increase in heavy yearling steers, grown steers and bullocks. All of the regular buyers were present and a lack of vealers led to very strong demand, especially for medium to lighter weight vealers, which were 10 cents to 20 cents per kilogram dearer.
Most other cattle sold at rates that were unchanged to three cents per kilogram dearer, but some of the yearlings averaged two cents to five cents per kilogram lower, due to some plainer quality.
Only 200 vealers were penned, and the best quality made from 245 cents to 272.2 cents per kilogram.
Other vealers made anywhere between 172 cents and 195 cents for some D muscle vealers, and 195 cents to 260 cents per kilogram with lighter weights making the higher prices.
There were 645 yearlings penned, and the lion’s share were steers with a large number of these weighting over 460 kilograms and many 500 kilograms to more than 600 kilograms liveweight.
The heifer portion sold well for most, making from 183 cents to 210 cents per kilogram for grass fattened heifers. A pen of supplementary fed heifers made 260 cents per kilogram.
Light to medium weight yearling steers made to 216 cents, but as most were of heavier weights, prices were mostly between 178 cents and 192 cents per kilogram.
More than 300 grown cattle generally sold to easing trends, by three cents to four cents per kilogram.
This was due in part to the increased supply, but the quality was a little plainer too.
Prime C muscle steers made to 189.2 cents with bullocks from 176 cents to 188 cents per kilogram.
Manufacturing bullocks made between 152 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
The VLE Draw for the week commencing Monday 1 August is as follows: 1, Elders; 2, SEJ; 3, Rodwells; 4, Nathan Gibbon; 5, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 6, Mick Hornsby; 7, Landmark; 8 Alex Scott.
