Quality on even keel

A STRONGER sale last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, saw good gains for veal and heifers and firm prices for bullocks and steers.
A more even quality yarding with improved weights saw a good sale for both vendors and buyers, with restockers strong in the action.
Seventy seven bullocks were steady, rising one cent to average 178 cents and the top sale was 1.6 cents higher at 191.6 cents.
Only 17 heifers were penned but rose 26 cents on average to 174.8 cents, with a smaller yarding quality was fairly even, although the top slipped to 205.6 cents.
Seventy one steers remained firm at an average of 180.4 cents, and their top rose 11 cents to 220.2 cents.
Two hundred and thirty three vealers aw the top lift four cents to 277.2 cents, and the higher end remained around the 170 cent mark for several pens, to see the average rise 11 cents to 222.6 cents. Quality in the lighter end was also quoted as fair to good.
A fairly stable sale on Thursday, with cows remaining firm, averaging 134.8 cents, the average weight was slightly lighter, but the top was a handy 170 cents, 424 cows were penned for the sale. Seventeen bulls eased on average to 156.9 cents, and the top made to a good 178.2 cents.
