Questions answered

YES, there were fewer cattle penned, yes, some very good to excellent quality was offered, and yes, a lot of the yarding weighed over 500 kilograms liveweight and were older steers and bullocks at VLE Pakenham.
The competition was unchanged but with a much smaller selection of vealers and young cattle penned, demand was stronger.
Prices were unchanged to eight cents dearer for young cattle, and equal three cents to five cents per kilogram dearer for heavier steers and bullocks.
While very strong demand for vealers, mostly of lighter weights, saw prices lift the most for these, making 210 cents to 255 cents per kilogram for C muscle vealers.
Other vealers made from 198 cents to 268 cents per kilogram, but lesser quality saw some price averages reduced. Generally the sale of 210 vealers was very strong.
This same scenario was seen for yearling steers and heifers, especially a line of 40 supplementary fed steers and heifers that made between 260 cents and 270 cents per kilogram with most weighing from 400 kilograms to 470 kilograms liveweight.
Away from these excellent quality yearlings, most steers made from 192 cents to 225 cents, and heifers 176 cents to 210 cents per kilogram.
In the penning of 350 yearlings, a number of well bred, but plainer condition cattle sold to feedlots and restockers from 195 cents to 235 cents per kilogram.
The balance of the yarding was made up of 400 very heavy steers, bullocks and grown heifers.
The weight, age and quality of these varied greatly, but all sold well with prices for heavy steers from 187 cents to 200 cents, and prime bullocks 185 cents to 192 cents per kilogram.
Some very heavy manufacturing bullocks made 178 cents to 185 cents with all others 142 cents to 172 cents per kilogram. Grown heifers made mostly from 156 cents to 175 cents per kilogram.
