Golf a la cart at Garfield

DESPITE the wet, golf at Garfield is continuing with minimal disruption … and the continued use of carts.
Besides normal competitions, the West Gippsland Women’s Golf Association Doris Page event was held last Friday.
Most of the course is in great shape, with only a few localised wet areas. In a way, the wet weather has been a blessing in that it has highlighted some issues with the drainage system that are being taken care of.
The wet areas on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes are expected to begin drying out now that the blockages have been found and opened. Once there’s more drying out, drains will be fully repaired and the areas affected levelled and sown.
Hats off to life members Gary Kelly and Peter Johnson and member Mick Matthews who, with course staff Duane and Phil, spent considerable time locating and opening up the blockages and getting the drains running again. Thanks to their efforts, Garfield has become a true all-weather course.
The week got off to a good start with pleasant playing conditions for the 13 women competing in their Tuesday competition.
Sharon Carmody was the star, winning the monthly medal, coming back to good form after an enforced two months off because of injury.
Meredith Bowers continues to play excellent golf, winning the Rose Bowl (a board event) and the Silver Spoon. Meredith will play in the state Silver Spoon final at Waverley in late October.
