Lightweight market is less than average

LIGHTER weight averages for veal last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, as well as some easier quality saw a minor reduction in the average.
Steers managed a slight increase and bullocks remained firm. Restockers were very active with most going home with necessary stock.
Forty-six bullocks averaged 187.5 cents for the yarding, the top was three cents easier at 194.6 cents. Weights were marginally lighter than last sale.
Forty-four heifers with heavier weight averages eased one cent to 172.8 cents, but lifted the per head average $46 to $830, and the top was 215.6 cents.
Fifty-two steers rose two cents on average to 186.5 cents, and their weight average was lighter, returning a per head value of $880. The top was 210.2 cents.
One hundred and seventy seven veal were lighter on average, with easier condition across the smaller pens. This eased the average to 208.5, with the top price of 265 cents.
Thursdays sale proved demand is still strong with both bulls and cows rising five cents on average.
Very few beef cows were offered in the yarding of 324 head, but prices still remained firmer, the top was a repeat of last sale at 170.2 cents and the average returned at 138.9 cents.
Light cows sold to reasonable demand with only one sub 100 cent head sold. Heavier frames saw the per head value $60 better at $728 average.
