Work for all play

Gembrook Township Committee’s John Cascone said the new kids’ play area and park furniture would be “great”.
Mr Cascone said the new facilities would not just be for tourists arriving in the town on Puffing Billy, but also for Gembrook residents who could use them frequently.
He said he wasn’t sure when work on the new playground would be completed, but said he hoped it would be in time for this year’s Kids’ Fun Run with Thomas.
“All these things will help lift the profile of the town,” he said.
Cardinia Shire Council earmarked JAC Russell Park as one of several council-owned parks and reserves, which were in need of improvement over the next 12 months.
Mayor George Blenkhorn said the renewal program – which includes sporting facility upgrades – reflected the council’s commitment to providing up-to-date facilities for a growing community.
“While council has a comprehensive maintenance program for preserving its assets, there is also a need to upgrade facilities at the end of their useful life,” Cr Blenkhorn said.
“The expanding population generates considerable pressure on the existing facilities, and council is obliged to provide safe, enjoyable and attractive leisure and recreation opportunities for the community’s diverse needs.”
Ranges Ward councillor Graeme Legge said the new equipment would give Gembrook a “much-needed lift”.
He said work on the park would happen “sooner rather than later”, but couldn’t pinpoint exactly when.
As part of Cardinia’s sporting facility upgrades, Cockatoo’s tennis courts will also receive a much-needed revamp.
