Makings of price fall

A LARGER supply and a small reduction in competition met with a generally plainer quality yarding of young and grown cattle this week at VLE Pakenham.
However, there were small numbers of top quality vealers and yearlings which sold at unchanged rates, as did most of the grown steers and bullocks.
Away from these solid prices, averages were two cents to eight cents per kilogram lower which was driven mostly by the plainer quality.
There were only 185 vealers penned, and the best of these made to 280 cents per kilogram.
Away from the few top quality vealers, most others made between 210 cents and 265 cents with plainer shape D muscle vealers 185 cents to 215 cents per kilogram.
A larger percentage of the yearlings penned were supplementary fed, and included some excellent quality steers and heifers that made from 255 cents to 272 cents per kilogram.
Other supplementary fed yearlings varied a lot in weight and made between 205 cents and 252 cents per kilogram liveweight.
The penning of 485 yearlings included some good quality grass fattened yearlings, but there was quite a number of poorly bred, and plain condition cattle penned.
The better quality, lighter and medium weight steers sold from 192 cents to 228 cents, and similar heifers 189 cents to 222 cents per kilogram.
Heavy steers sold well making 188 cents to 198 cents per kilogram. There was a number of plain condition heifers sold from 150 cents to 194 cents per kilogram.
Grown cattle made up around 20 per cent of the yarding and included 240 grown steers and bullocks. Selling at unchanged rates prices were between 184 cents and 199 cents per kilogram. Secondary bullocks and grown heifers sold between 152 cents and 185 cents per kilogram.
