CRANBOURNE star Justin Berry – a key player in Saturday’s grand final against Narre Warren – has attracted the attention of fledgling AFL club Greater Western Sydney.
Berry, 30, received phone calls from the GWS recruiting department and head coach and AFL legend, Kevin Sheedy.
Sheedy was at last year’s Australian Country Football Carnival, where Berry dominated and was named on a half-forward flank in the All-Australian team.
Berry was tight-lipped when asked to describe details of the conversations.
“It’s nothing major, I did get a call from GWS, and Kevin Sheedy, but they’ve got a list of over 100 players that they’re contacting,” Berry said. “They’re interested in players like Chad Cornes – he’s 31 or 32 – so that’s probably why I got the call, I don’t know. Look, they said I might not get another call, I haven’t had an invite to go up there or anything like that.”
Berry seemed keen to deflect the focus on to Saturday’s grand final at Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick.
“We’ve got a big game coming up, that’s the focus at the moment,” he said. “I didn’t show much interest (in the GWS calls), I think they’re just putting the feelers out.”
Jessica Ries, media manager for GWS, refused to comment when asked about Berry.- David Nagel
