Vealers remain thin on the ground

WHILE there were some good through to excellent quality penned at VLE Pakenham, a bigger percentage of the larger yarding were of plainer quality or breeding.
Quality vealers remain scarce, and these sold at unchanged rates, as did a few pens of good quality yearling heifers.
There was an extra buyer present, buying 0 to 2 teeth steers but these and most other cattle sold to cheaper trends, mostly two cents to eight cents per kilogram lower.
There were 240 vealers penned and the best quality B muscle vealers made from 255 cents to 278.2 cents per kilogram.
Away from these, most were C muscle vealers that made from 198 cents to 260 cents per kilogram, unless they were too fat making 173 cents to 195 cents per kilogram.
Included in the offering of 600 yearlings were several pens of supplementary fed cattle that sold from 255 cents to 270 cents per kilogram.
These sold at unchanged rates, as did several pens of European breed heifers that made from 205 cents to 240 cents per kilogram.
Away from these, most steers sold between 184 cents and 220 cents with heavy steers only reaching 195 cents per kilogram.
Heifer prices were quite varied, due to weight and quality with prices ranging from 157 cents to 198 cents per kilogram for most sales. Close to 500 grown cattle were penned, which included a lot of prime bullocks and heavy steers.
Prices were between 184 cents and 187 cents with grown steers to 195 cents per kilogram.
Plenty of manufacturing bullocks and grown heifers made from 160 cents to 188 cents per kilogram.
