FOR the second year in a row, Pakenham’s Goldsack family faces a gruelling grand final week.
Collingwood utility Tyson is a likely emergency for the big match, after just missing out on the 22 for the preliminary final against Hawthorn.
He was in a similar position last year, but was called up for the grand final replay where he kicked the first goal of the match on his way to becoming a Magpie premiership immortal.
There could be a twist in the tale this year as well, with at least two key Collingwood stars under major injury clouds.
The 24-year-old could be swung into the side to replace Ben Reid if he doesn’t recover from a groin strain suffered in the win over the Hawks.
Wendy Goldsack said she would dearly love to see her son in the side, but would not be wishing misfortune on Ben Reid.
“Ben came through with Tyson in the same draft year, I have a soft spot for all of those guys,” she said.
“But if he is not fully fit, Tyson would be a great 22nd player.”
Wendy said last year’s premiership medal would be no consolation, if he missed out on Saturday.
“I think he will always have that, but it is another year. You go through the year with your mates, so if the team is doing it and he’s not, he will do it really hard.”
The family will be at the game to support Tyson, who may have to deal with the mixed emotions of watching his team-mates write their names in AFL history without him.
“We’ll definitely be there whether he is playing or not,” she said. “It will be hugely emotional, you need your support behind them.”
If he misses out, Wendy will be hoping for a draw so that her boy has a chance to repeat last year’s unlikely selection.
