Growth eats into food production

THE impact of urban development on agriculture and food production will be discussed at a day-long forum later this month.
Hosted by several organisations including Urban Reforestation, the Food Alliance and RMIT, the forum will look at the importance of agricultural land and offer sustainable solutions for future planning.
Director of Urban Reforestation, Emily Ballantyne-Brodie, said the preservation, management and development of agricultural resources was important for the future.
“Whichever way you look at it, food production forms the basis for physical, environmental, economic, social and cultural health,” she said.
Representatives from outer-suburban shires including Casey and Cardinia will attend the day where international and local speakers will present ideas.
Other stakeholders including farmers and urban and landscape design professionals are also encouraged to attend.
The forum will be held on 25 October at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Broadmeadows.
