Pennant team flies flag for Garfield

GARFIELD Bowling Club’s two main teams suffered defeat on Saturday and the only bright point of the week was the good win by the ladies in Tuesday pennant.
By mid-morning on Saturday it looked as though rain would, for the second Saturday in a row, destroy any chance of competition at Garfield. However play was possible soon after lunch on a wet and heavy green, which dried out quickly due to the strong breeze.
Despite winning three of the four rinks the Division 2 home side playing against Moe had to settle for only half the points and a narrow loss by just two shots (86/88).
This has resulted in a fall from the top of the table to fourth place although only seven points adrift of the leaders.
Individual scores: W. Gunton, R. James, S. Oliver and skipper S. Whyte won 21/20; P. Dawes, N. Henwood, T. Cleary and skipper G. Payne won 28/23; W. Goodman, P. Leishout, J. Oliver and skipper S. Bassed won 25/19 and F. Prins, K. Rowlands, M. Shaw and G. skipper Asquith lost 12/26.
Driving to Trafalgar for the Division 5 match through heavy rain, team members were convinced there would be little chance of play.
However after a delayed start the skies cleared and a match of full length was possible before the return home again through heavy rain.
After a slow start the Garfield visitors went into tea up by a single shot but all luck deserted them after the break with the final score being 68/55 in favour of the home team.
Individual scores: A. Helmuth, R. Slaughter, L. Shatwell and skipper R. Hope won 21/20; M. Lamport, J. Tomlin, R. Lamport and skipper K. Tomlin lost 14/25 and S. Gemmill, J. Lenders, A. Mentiplay and skipper W. Charles lost 20/23.
On Tuesday, playing against Longwarry the Division 3 ladies had a good win by 71/65. Having been successful against Longwarry at the beginning of the season it was expected that the rival neighbours would come back strongly in an attempt to avenge that defeat. However Garfield withstood the challenge to run out worthy winners again.
Individual scores: L. Moss, W. Rowlands, M. Lamport and skipper R. Shaw won 27/21; I. Deane, B. Sainsbery, E. Lee and J. Pocklington lost 16/26 and J. Tomlin, P. Marriot, L. Asquith and L. Oliver won 28/18.
There was no play on Saturday in the Division 6 match against Boolara, scheduled for play at Garfield.
