PAKENHAM’S princess fever last week was not the first time royalty has visited Cardinia Shire, with Prince Charles and Princess Diana and also Prince Edward visiting in past years.
The first, a royal visit in 1983 just weeks after the devastating Ash Wednesday fires swept through Cockatoo gave locals a sense of hope as they tried to rebuild their lives.
Former Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade Captain Eric Bumpstead won the job of showing Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana around and introduced them to local brigade members. Prince Edward visited Pakenham in 2006 as part of the Duke of Edinburgh awards – a visit organised by Kate Lempriere.
