Make savings in recycling

RESIDENTS who buy a compost bin from 1 October can now claim their $30 rebate from Cardinia Shire Council.
Ratepayers can make the request through the council’s website: www.cardinia.vic.gov.au, by mailing their claim to Cardinia Shire Council, PO Box 7, Pakenham 3810 or in person at the council office on Henty Way.
Proof of purchase through a receipt and proof of address through a utility bill, concession card, pension card or driver’s licence is required.
The rebate can be claimed straightaway by visiting the council office or within 28 days of submitting the form online or by post.
The rebate is limited to one per household.
Mayor George Blenkhorn said the composition of household garbage showed it was possible for many households to reduce their waste.
“You can recycle your food scraps, garden material and coffee in a compost bin, which reduces the waste sent to landfill, lowers greenhouse gas emissions from food waste in landfills and creates a great resource to use on your garden,” he said.
“The new compost bin rebate is a great incentive to keep food scraps out of the waste stream and start composting.”
Ratepayers can also claim another $30 rebate by requesting an 80 litre bin in exchange for their 120 litre bin and have until Friday 9 December to make the request online or by calling 1300 787 624.
All ratepayers need to do is make the request, put their bin out every week during the February–March exchange period and wait for the savings to appear on their 2012–13 rates notice.
The rebate will appear on next year’s rate notice, along with a discount on next year’s garbage charge for keeping the 80 litre bin.
