Demand rises on increased quality

THERE were 747 head penned on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, and all sold to firmer rates.
Demand was strong from all sectors and quality was above average.
Ninety five bullocks averaged heavier, prices eased slightly as a result but were still quoted as firm to strong.
Eighty two heifers made a good forward move rising seven cents.
Condition and weights were fairly even across all pens.
Seventy four steers also weighed in heavier and rose around $90 per head, with stores strong on the day.
Four hundred and sixty eight vealers sold to stronger demand.
This resulted in a higher top price.
The average weight was marginally lighter, but condition was excellent.
Bullocks averaged 173.5 cents and topped at 191.2 cents.
Heifers made to 212 cents for an average of 177.5 cents. Steers up two cents to 182 cents and reached 233.6 cents and veal rose four cents to 208.8 cents and made to a top of 245.6 cents.
On Thursday bulls saw smaller average weights and some lighter quality for 33 head.
The average slipped five cents to 146.5 cents, and the top price improved to 189.6 cents.
Thirty six bullocks weighed heavy and lifted the average five cents to 171.3 cents, to reach a top of 175 cents.
Three hundred and three cows contained a larger percentage of good quality beef and heavy Friesians.
This saw the average rise seven cents to 144.6 cents. Top cow price this week was 172 cents.
