GARFIELD Bowling club played host to Neerim in Division Two of the West Gippsland Bowls Division and the expected close encounter turned out to be just that. Garfield’s hopes of having a slower grass green advantage were dashed by the strong wind and high temperature which turned it into a fast running green.
In front early and looking like remaining in control at the tea break Garfield lacked the ability to hold on and went down by seven shots, 91/98. The exception was Jim Oliver’s side which with good performances from Tom Cleary and the skip himself won by nine shots.
W.Goodman, R.Shaw, S.Oliver and S.Whyte (S) lost 16/27.
P.Dawes, M.Shaw, T.Cleary and J.Oliver (S) won 26/17.
W.Gunton, R.Lamport, P.Leishout and S.Bassed (S) lost 26/28.
F.Prins, G.Asquith, N.Henwood and L.Pumphrey (S) lost 23/26.
Division 2
Due to chemical damage to a green at Traralgon RSL the Division Two game was switched to the Traralgon Bowling Club. On a day when a North Easterly wind affected bowling right across Gippsland, Garfield scrambled home by just two shots (70/68) to keep it in second place on the ladder.
The side Skipped by Ken Tomlin got away to a good start but slipped back toward the tea break. It was not until later that they really put a break on the opposition to win by eight shots. Bill Charles was in good form both in terms of his own bowling and skipping his team. However it was not until the 22nd end that they pulled away and eventually won by four.
R.James, J.Lenders, L.Shatwell and R.Hope (S) lost 17/27.
S.Gemmill, K.Sainsbery, K.Rowlands and W.Charles (S) won 28/24.
A.Helmuth, J.Rose, A.Mentiplay and K.Tomlin (S) won 25/17.
Division 6
Playing at home against Morwell the Garfield Division Six team were outplayed and out of luck. Both sides started well early on but then went down (39/72) to two good sides which, despite the conditions, displayed some good and accurate bowling, especially from the Skips.
By contrast for Garfield it was a day when everything it tried did not quite come off.
D.Humphreys, P.Marriott, L.Asquith and L.Oliver (S) lost 13/35.
R.Slaughter, P.Humphreys, M.Lamport and J.Pocklington lost 16/37.
Ladies
The ladies’ Tuesday Pennant, also against Morwell, was a better story with a sound win for Garfield 76/64. The game was notable for the success of Rose Shaw’s side having a runaway win by 25 shots. With that in the bag and Garfield losing both the other rinks it still won overall.
L.Moss, W.Rowlands, M.Lamport and R.Shaw (S) won 36/11.
I.Deane, B.Sainsbery, E.Lee and J.Pocklington (S) lost 21/31.
J.Tomlin, P.Marriot, L.Asquith and L.Oliver (S) lost 19/22.
