Helpers need helping hand

By Lilly O’Gorman
OZCHILD will deliver a new family support program to cope with the growing need for support services in the region.
Positive Horizons Plus has announced the opening of its Volunteer Family Support Program in Pakenham which will service the Shire of Cardinia.
Positive Horizons Plus volunteer co-ordinator Julie Reid said the program was calling for volunteers to help deliver its services to local families and children.
“A large study was undertaken regarding families in the Shire of Cardinia which identified that many families are struggling with issues such as drug and alcohol, family violence and mental health,” Ms Reid said.
“There is quite a large need out there. It was recommended that various support services be put in place to assist these families and children to have better outcomes.”
Adrian is an OzChild volunteer with the Positive Horizons Plus program said he enjoyed helping the community.
“I volunteer to be a healthy influence and to make a difference in the community, because I value families and want to help them in their journey,” he said.
“Positive community change involves one person at a time.”
Ms Reid said she would like to hear from anyone aged over 18 who is interested in volunteering their time with OzChild.
Volunteer information sessions will be held on Monday 6 and Thursday 18 February at the Frankston office, 405 Nepean Highway, and Tuesday 28 February at the Pakenham Living and Learning Centre, 6B Henry Street.
Families can call OzChild direct on 8796 0000 and ask to have a volunteer work with them. Inquiries can also be made to Julie on 0407 853 410.
