SAMANTHA Prime outran the pack to claim the Athletics Victoria Junior 5km Road Racing Championship at Lake Wendouree in Ballarat on Saturday.
Samantha Prime, 16, from Narre Warren, who races for Casey Cardinia Athletics, took line honours to claim the junior women’s Road Racing Championship in a time of 17.21 minutes. with an impressive display of front-running.
What makes the win even more impressive is that Prime is returning from two years on the sidelines with a series of stress fractures, sidelining her until the start of this season.
I’ve been injured for two years with stress fractures so this is my first year coming back doing all the winter series, so I’m surprised at how well I’m going at the moment,” Prime said.
“I was the first girl across the line in the junior age group – there were a few good competitors, another under-20 girl that I just beat towards the end and it was a pretty tough race as I don’t usually do five kilometre races.”
Prime now prepares for the state cross country championships in July.
“Two weeks away there’s one in Brimbank Park in Keilor east then we have the big state championship in July and that goes to the selections for nationals in August,” Prime said.
“Hopefully I do well, just hope to be competitive in it and see how it goes.”
