THE YAKKERBOO Festival Art Show is encouraging more contemporary feel from entrants.
Bronwyn Fleming, president of the art show, said it had been seen as a very traditional art show for many years, but contemporary artists were also welcome.
“We are trying to push a more contemporary feel,” she said.
“We want to make sure contemporary artists feel welcome and it is not just traditional.”
Grissel Walmaggia, cultural planning officer for the City of Greater Dandenong and works with public art projects, has been named as a judge.
“I am not your traditional art competition judge, however I believe I bring fresh eyes to the works,” Ms Walmaggia said.
“They (the art show committee) are looking at branching out and looking at new styles, and I am hoping to bring some of that to life.”
Ms Walmaggia said she would be looking for artwork which had an emotional aspect as well as traditional elements like composition and form.
“Some works might provoke a range of emotions, and I will be looking for things like that,” she said.
“Something that lingers with you for a while and when you come back you can expect to find something new.”
It will be the 37th year of the exhibition of traditional and contemporary fine art, and it will open at the Pakenham Town Hall on Friday 26 April.
The exhibition will run from Friday 26 April to Sunday 28 April and $4600 worth of prizes will be awarded to local talent and artists from all over Australia.
The Prize categories are Gold, Silver and Bronze for Landscape, Portraiture, Still Life Flora and Fauna and Contemporary.
Categories are not limited to canvas work and artists can enter artworks from a range of medium and mixed mediums.
There is a Cardinia Shire Artist Award of $500 plus guests have the chance to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Award.
