I WRITE to express concern that the charging of a co-payment for a visit to a GP is being canvassed.
I believe that the universal Medicare cover reflects well on us as a decent society.
It as not as though it is “free”.
Most of us pay a gap now for medical services.
But the fact that some practices bulk-bill to a greater or lesser extent provides help for the vulnerable.
Further, the claim that many people over-use the services is rejected as a furphy by those close to the action.
It is clear that the costs of more and more complex treatments and the ageing of the population need to be met.
But, why not increase the Medicare levy and retain the purity of a wonderful system?

Pakenham.
