Prices ease on greater supply

A LARGER yarding of 1131 head sold at the fat cattle sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday, and with these larger numbers recorded across the state, prices have settled down a little with a slight easing through all categories.
Bullock numbers were up and the only hiccup was the absence of one major buyer from this category, which in turn eased bullock prices by 10 cents on average.
Good quality heifers were on offer and this category managed to hold value in the better pens with the secondary pens slipping.
Steer numbers were up, with larger numbers of secondary head penned. Feedlotters were holding back which eased steer prices. Vealers contained light secondary pens, with private buyers keen in this area. The top pens held value, with the smaller head bypassed by processors.
The yard average was back 10 cents to 214.2; bullocks made to 242, back 12, and averaged 220.2, back 10; heifers made to 248, up six, and averaged 208.9, back five; steers made to 247, firm, and averaged 211.6, back 17 and veal made to 270, up two, and averaged 214.9, back nine.
Numbers on Thursday were also slightly up. Bulls sold to 268.2, firm on the previous week and the average was 208.2 cents, back 13 cents. Bullocks penned made to 223.6, and averaged 203.1, and cows made to a top of 210, back on the previous week with the quality in the top pens not quite there in comparison, and with the larger numbers across the state also affecting the prices the average was back 20 cents to 154.6.
The yard average was back 19 cents to 161.1.
