Condition pushes up prices

Numbers at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, were larger last Wednesday as 753 head were yarded for the Fat Sale.
Condition was regarded as improved on the previous week and prices indicated that this was a correct call.
Fewer bullocks sold to strong demand and with an extra buyer absent last week the market finished the day averaging four cents better.
Heifers were again popular and the competition was brisk, with good improvements.
Steers were the best performers on the day with a lift of 14 cents on average.
Veal managed to obtain the best top price with a pen of four head making to 316.6 cents per kilogram.
The yard average rose eight cents to 253.6 cents.
Thirty six bullocks topped at 288.6 cents, back seven cents, and averaged 258.2 cents, up four cents; 84 heifers topped at 275.6 cents, firm, and averaged 234.9 cents, up eight cents; 147 steers topped at 201.6 cents, up six cents, and averaged 262.3 cents, up 14 cents, and 471 veal topped at 316.6 cents, up 6.6 cents, and averaged 254 cents, up three cents.
There was a smaller yarding on Thursday with 535 head penned.
Demand remained strong as there was one major buyer absent to counter the lack of numbers.
Twenty eight bulls made to 266.2 cents this week, slightly lower on the previous week, and with an average of 225.3 cents, finished the day easier.
Fifty six bullocks topped at 282.6 cents, up 19 cents and averaged 17 cents better at 241.7 cents.
Cow numbers were almost half with 450 head penned.
The top was back to 229.2 cents, but the average for cows was up four cents to 176.5 cents and the yard average was 187.1 cents, up nine cents on the previous week.
