Best pulls up prices

A yarding of 618 head, up 85 on the previous week, was offered at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul on Wednesday.
With a large number of lighter quality pens sold, demand for the better end is still strong with good prices in this area.
The lighter pens struggled slightly although the fewer numbers of recent weeks held off a big fall in this area.
Feedlots and restockers were prominent in the steer section which resulted in a lift for this category.
This week’s yard average slipped seven cents to 241.4 cents.
Fifty five bullocks topped at 280 cents, back eight cents, and averaged 240.2 cents, back 20 cents; 56 heifers topped at 269.2 cents, back 11 cents, and averaged 230 cents, back 11 cents; 106 steers topped at 295 cents, up seven cents, and averaged 249.1 cents, up nine cents and 388 veal topped at 318.6 cents, up six cents, and averaged 214.1 cents, back 10 cents.
There was a good rise in the cow section on Thursday, with a larger number of good heavy beef cows yarded, as well as a larger percentage of heavy dairy cows.
The end result for cows was 523 head penned with a top of 228 cents, back four cents, and an average of 176.6 cents, up 14 cents.
There were 27 bulls sold and demand was easier.
The top bull made to 265.6 cents, back 10 cents, and the average was 18 cents easier at 214.1 cents. The Thursday yard average was 179.8 cents, up 11 cents.
