Buyers feed on secondary market

THERE were approximately 400 export and 500 young cattle penned at VLE Pakenham representing a decrease of 870 head week-on-week.
There was a full field of buyers present competing in a dearer market.
Quality was typical of a winter yarding, with prime cattle in short supply while there was a good selection of secondary vealers and yearlings suited to feed on which sold to strong demand.
Competition strengthened from processors and lo feeders for the limited offering.
The vealers suited to butcher orders sold seven cents to 13 cents per kilogram dearer while the secondary lines to lot feeders saw similar improvement.
Yearling trade steers lifted five cents to 13 cents while the heifer portion sold up to 10 cents per kilogram dearer.
Feeder steers improved five cents to 10 cents while the heifer portion gained up to 20 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers and bullocks improved five cents to 10 cents per kilogram for a very limited selection.
A handful of heavy weight grown heifers sold 19 cents dearer while heavy weight Friesian and crossbred manufacturing steers jumped 10 cents per kilogram.
The limited selection of vealers sold mostly from 248 cents to 310 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 272 cents and 310 cents per kilogram. Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 240 cents to 300 cents per kilogram.
Feeder steers made from 252 cents to 292 cents with the heifer portion from 235 cents to 280 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 272 cents to 317 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 263 cents and 316 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish sold between 222 cents and 279 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 230 cents to 235 cents, with the crossbred portion from 240 cents to 275 cents per kilogram.
