Buyers’ battles push up prices

The improved prices of recent weeks continued last Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, as numbers across saleyards remain lighter, forcing prices up as processors and feedlots push hard to obtain numbers.
The secondary section of the yardings still tend to hold averages back even though the prices in this area are above those obtained around this time of year as condition starts to ease due to cooler weather.
Bullocks are selling to strong demand and, even though heavy bullocks were back in numbers, the bullock average lifted 27 cents this week.
Steers were also less in numbers and lifted in the better pens on the back of better demand.
Heifers saw improved condition this week and finished the day with a top sale of 320 cents per kilogram.
Veal demand remains steady and with less numbers rose on average by 11 cents.
The yard average was up 12 cents to 272 cents.
Thirty bullocks topped at 295 cents, firm, and averaged 280.3 cents , up 27 cents; 42 heifers topped at 320 cents, up 40 cents, and averaged 241.4 cents, up seven cents; 55 steers topped at 317.2 cents, up two cents, and averaged 265.5 cents, up nine cents, and 266 vealers topped at 339.2 cents, up four cents, and averaged 279.6 cents, up 11 cents.
There was a slight lift in numbers for the Thursday Bull and Cow sale with prices firm across all categories.
Very light condition among the dairy section eased some values but overall the market was firm to stronger.
Twenty seven bulls made to 279.6 cents, up two cents, and averaged 233.9 cents, back three cents; 11 bullocks made to 262 cents, back 18 cents, and averaged 248.3 cents, firm; 444 cows made to 247.6 cents, back 12 cents, and averaged 201.6 cents, back two cents.
The yard average was 205 cents, back three cents.
