Quality impresses buyers

NUMBERS remain steady for the fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange with 492 head yarded last week.
Quality was very good given the dry conditions which several buyers commented on.
Demand remains strong for all categories with a lift in all averages resulting in a yard average of 279.5 cents, which was four cents up on last week.
Bullock weights were firm and although heifers averaged lighter the better prices lifted the per head price.
Steers returned the best average rise with feedlots and restockers very strong in this area.
Vealers continued their run of good quality and prices and were firm to marginally stronger.
Fifty-six bullocks topped at 297.2 cents, up 11 cents, and averaged 275.3 cents, up two cents.
Fifty-four heifers topped at 285 cents, back five cents, and averaged 261.6 cents, up nine cents.
Fifty-six steers topped at 297.2 cents, back seven cents, and averaged 263.4 cents, up 31 cents.
A total of 325 veal topped at 330.2 cents, up four cents, and averaged 288.9 cents, up four cents.
An extra 50 head was yarded on Thursday, with a larger yarding of 50 bulls.
Prices were firm to stronger, good quality among the pens kept the higher end prices over a fair percentage of the sale.
The top of the week was 288.2 cents, up 20 cents, and the average also rose 20 cents to 239.7 cents.
Forty-four bullocks reached a top of 263.6 cents and averaged 242.9 cents, up 10 cents, while 545 cows topped at 262.6 cents and the average was six cents better at 198.5 cents with a yard average of 206 cents up 10 cents on last week.
