Pressures pull back prices

THE larger than usual numbers and lack of condition has started to pull prices back across the saleyards at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange.
Last Wednesday saw an extra 200 head yarded with the yard average slipping 15 cents to 271.4 cents.
Quality has eased over recent weeks, forcing the secondary pens to struggle on the lack of demand from processors.
Re-stockers and feedlots were cautious about feed, bullocks averaged heavier, heifers found the going tough although there were a larger number in the secondary pens.
Steers sold to firm demand in the better pens and some very light veal pens pulled their average back 14 cents.
Thirty-five bullocks made to 282 cents, back six cents, and averaged 266.1 cents, back eight cents.
Fifty heifers made to 286 cents, back three cents and averaged 233.2 cents, back 42 cents.
Sixty steers made to 300 cents, up 1.5 cents, and averaged 256.9 cents, back 13 cents.
A total of 493 veal made to 330 cents, back 20 cents, and averaged 279.8 cents, back 14 cents.
The Thursday bull and cow sale saw a similar number to the previous week, and although demand has eased prices tended to remain firm to only slightly easier.
Thirty-nine bulls made to a top of 287.2 cents, back seven cents, and averaged 213.9 cents with some light weight bulls penned.
A total of 650 cows reached 280 cents. This was up 25 cents and the average of 162.9 cents was 1.5 cents back on the last sale.
The Thursday average was four cents easier at 167.6 cents.
