Patchy quality in firm market

THERE were approximately 400 export and 700 young cattle penned for a similar overall number week-on-week at the Victorian Livestock Exchange.
Most of the usual buying group was present and operating in a solid market which was dearer in places.
Quality was mixed with fewer heavy export drafts and many throughout the sale lacking finish.
Vealers sold dearer on some sales but averaged firm for most.
Yearling cattle to the trade sold from firm to 10 cents dearer while the feeder lines lifted seven cents for most.
A limited selection of grown steers and bullocks sold firm to eight cents dearer.
There was a scattering of plain light weight and ill-bred cattle through the sale which struggled to attract bidding.
Heavy weight vealers to butchers sold from 310 cents to 345 cents.
Yearling trade steers made between 310 cents and 341 cents.
Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 276 cents and 337 cents.
Feeder steers made from 280 cents to 325 cents with the heifer portion from 268 cents to 314 cents.
Numbers were limited in all export categories and prime drafts even more so.
Grown steers sold from 285 cents to 320 cents.
Bullocks made between 305 cents and 318 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 255 cents and 300 cents.
Heavy weight crossbred manufacturing steers made from 270 cents to 295 cents.
