THERE were a few extra head yarded on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange’s fat sale.
Heifers and vealers made up most of the extra numbers, bullock numbers were still back, although demand pushed the top up with quality improved on recent weeks.
Heifer numbers were doubled last week and although the top was firm quality in the secondary pens pulled the average back.
Steer numbers were lower, several pens of good line head saw bidding brisk and an improved average price, vealer quality remained steady on recent sales and finished the sale firm.
The week’s yard average was up two cents to 329.7 cents, 19 bullocks topped at 368 cents, up 29 cents, and averaged 353.3 cents, 36 heifers topped at 363.6 cents firm and averaged 285.8 cents back, 36 steers topped at 366.2 cents, up four cents and averaged 334.9 cents, up seven cents, and 170 vealers topped at 394.6 cents, up four cents and averaged 344.9 cents firm.
Extra numbers were also recorded on Thursday when a yarding of 12 bulls saw a top price of 314.2 cents, which was six cents up on last week.
Lighter quality among the pens eased the bull average by 13 cents to 252.4 cents.
An extra 96 cows were penned and quality in the better pens was slightly improved and with the continued strong demand obtained a top of 315 cents, up 30 cents on the previous week, and cows averaged 235.1 cents which was firm on the previous week.
The yard average lifted two cents to 237.7 cents.
