Long weekend subdues sale

WITH the long weekend looming, last week’s fat sale at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange contained only 208 head.
Quality was not quiet to the standards of recent weeks, especially in the heifer section, and the secondary vealer pens bullock numbers were still back with six penned.
Heifer numbers halved which also reflected in the price, steers were stronger week, and the vealer section was firm although the top was back on the previous week.
The week’s yard average was steady at 345.5 cents.
Six bullocks topped at 360 cents, back two cents, and averaged 315.6 cents, 26 heifers topped at 350 cents, back 37 cents, and averaged 305.7 cents, back 14 cents, 22 steers topped at 366.2 cents, back 14 cents, and averaged 333.1 cents, up 13 cents, and 146 veal topped at 423.2 cents, back 11 cents and averaged 365.4 cents firm.
Thursdays cow and bull sale was a similar situation to Wednesday with less cattle yarded due to the upcoming long weekend and buyers were reluctant to hold over large numbers.
This saw less competition and easier prices. Six bulls made to 268.6 cents to average 264.8 cents, and 229 cows topped at 277.2 cents, back 40 cents and the average was 10 cents easier at 233.3 cents.
The draw for 5 and 6 October is: 1, S.E.J; 2, Scotts; 3, Landmark; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
