Winter takes toll on market

There were approximately 360 export and 320 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 260 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
The usual buying group was present and operating more selectively in a cheaper market.
Quality declined with fewer finished grown steers and bullocks and a more limited supply of grain assisted trade cattle as the majority of the offering appeared winter affected.
Results were a little mixed in the vealers with the steers a few cents dearer and the heifers a little easier. A limited selection of grass finished yearling trade cattle sold from firm to eight cents cheaper.
The restricted supply of grain assisted trade cattle continued the cheaper trend with the best lots up to 20 cents cheaper.
Feeder steers sold mostly firm. Grown steers and bullocks eased one cent to five cents.
Heavy weight manufacturing steers were off three cents to six cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 336 cents to 378 cents, yearling trade steers made between 314 cents and 369 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 288 cents and 365 cents and feeder steers made from 304 cents and 369 cents.
Grown steers sold mostly from 280 cents to 316 cents after a top of 323 cents and a handful of bullocks made between 298 cents and 310 cents.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 256 cents and 267 cents with the crossbred portion between 278 cents and 308 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 12 June is: 1, Elders; 2, Alex Scott and Staff; 3, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 4, Nathan Gibbon Livestock; 5, Rodwells; 6, Landmark; 7, SEJ.
The next store sale is on Thursday 15 June at 10am.
