Cautious buying in smaller yard

There were approximately 270 export and 200 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 60 head week-on-week at Pakenham’s Victorian Livestock Exchange.
Most of the usual buying group was present and operating selectively in a cheaper market. Quality was plain with winter affected cattle throughout.
The handful of vealers eased 10 cents. Yearling cattle to the trade fell from 10 cents to 25 cents with the best grain assisted calves discounted the most.
Secondary young cattle suited to feed and restock also sold to softer demand.
Grown steers and bullocks eased six cents to 12 cents, heavy weight grown heifers slipped six cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers fell 14 cents with the crossbred portion back seven cents.
Vealers to butchers sold from 310 cents to 342 cents, yearling trade steers made between 286 cents and 312 cents, yearling heifers to the trade sold between 262 cents and 296 cents after a top of 327 cents, grown steers made from 284 cents to 304 cents, and bullocks sold from 290 cents to 300 cents.
Heavy weight grown heifers showing good finish made between 272 cents and 280 cents, heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers sold between 234 cents and 265 cents with the crossbred portion between 268 cents and 293 cents.
The VLE draw for the week commencing Monday 7 August is: 1 Elders, 2 Landmark, 3 Alex Scott and Staff, 4 S.E.J., 5 Nathan Gibbon Livestock, 6 Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 7 Rodwells.
The next store sale is on Thursday 10 August at 10am.
