There were 148 head at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange last week, with the yarding consisting mainly of vealers.
Quality in the vealer pens was improved as prices indicated with a good lift in the top prices and the overall average, while bullock steer and heifer numbers were lighter and remained firm to slightly easier, with the yard average rising 11 cents to 295.9 cents.
Five bullocks made to 289.2 cents, back 21 cents, and averaged 284 cents, firm.
Eighteen heifers made to 303.6 cents, back six cents, and averaged 271.1 cents, back four.
Twenty-three steers made to 300 cents, back 18 cents, and averaged 279.6 cents, back 11 cents.
A total of 102 vealers made to 364.6 cents, up 24 cents, and averaged 315.9 cents, up 20 cents.
Thursday’s bull and cow sale was stronger, accounting for 28 bulls and 316 cows penned – an increase of 60 head.
Cows sold to a firm demand with the average steady at 201.5 cents and the top sale in this section back three cents at 265.6 cents.
Quality in the beef section was heavier with several good pen lots on offer while dairy cattle averaged marginally easier in quality with a larger percentage of lighter bodies.
The bulls sold to a top of 293.6 cents, which was up three cents on the previous week, but some lack in quality and weight in the back part of the sale eased the average by five cents to 246.3 cents, easing the yard average by three cents to 206.2 cents.
