Q&A with Vicki Thornton, program officer at Myli Pakenham Library

What’s the most rewarding part of your day?

I love that every day at the library is so different! One day, I will be reading a book to toddlers or dressing up to celebrate Book Week, and the next I will be planting seedlings in our Discovery Garden and sharing how strawberries are so easy to propagate, or helping an avid reader find their next favourite author.

What’s something you’re currently working on or excited about?

We have a few exciting things happening at Pakenham soon! One does have to do with our Discovery Garden so watch this space and I always get excited planning for the next School Holidays. We do some awesome things!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received, and from whom?

Life is better with a friend – Snoopy.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what would you be doing?

I always wanted to be a Primary School Teacher, and here I am running programs for children. Life has a way of showing you what you were meant to do.

If you could effect change in your community, what would it be?

That more people realise how many wonderful services there are out there for them. It’s one of the hardest things for people, especially when they are feeling overwhelmed and feel no one is there for them, to know where to turn for help. It’s like people realising the library is there, that it’s no longer simply books we offer.

What events or activities would you recommend to people?

Libraries have so much to offer! Children’s programs for everyone from babies to teens. After-school programs during term as well as awesome School Holiday programs. Adult programs from crafts to exercise, conversation group to family movie nights. There is something for everyone, and it is all free. Where else do you get that!

What is something on your bucket list?

I would really love to learn how to swim properly. However, I’m terrified of deep water. It’s a bit of a quandary!

What is your biggest accomplishment that you are most proud of?

Being mum to two great kids and Grandma and Bop to four awesome grandkids.
